Evergate takes inspiration from Ori and the Blind Forest, and that inspiration shows clearly in the gameplay. Players control Ki, an innocent and youthful spirit trying to navigate its way through the afterlife. Players will revisit locations from Ki’s past life to learn more about his history to solve puzzles and unravel mysteries.

The key mechanic which sets Evergate apart from other games is Soulflame, which allows players to use crystals in the environment to boost Ki, create platforms, shields, and more. This mechanic is better seen than explained, and ultimately best experienced, but players can get a glimpse of it in the trailer below and can do further research by watching others play the game. Evergatemight not have been one of the expected indie games of August 2020, but it is certainly a welcome addition to that list.

Fan reception is mixed so far, as many are somewhat off-put by the similarities between the art style of Evergate and the Ori series of games, but ultimately players should either try the game out for themselves or wait for reviews before making a judgment. The Soulflame mechanic seems unique enough that it should help differentiate the game from other similar titles, and it is important not to judge a book, or a game, by its cover.

Evergate is available now on Nintendo Switch and will release later for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
