Tubi Potentially Producing Its Own TV Shows

At the Deutsche Bank Media, Internet and Telecom Conference, held in March 2021, Fox CFO (Chief Financial Officer) Steve Tomsic has stated that Tubi might soon see its own original TV shows and movies.

During his statement at the conference, Tomsic said Tubi won’t be going after expensive shows, referring to the big budget smash series like Marvel’s WandaVision on Disney+ or Netflix’ popular, post-apocalyptic, blizzard-romp, Snowpiercer.

Following a discussion with Fox investors, Tomsic has confirmed that we should expect “cost effective titles”.

Quite what this means is another matter. Will Tubi be featuring content from indie producers—similar to MUBI’s efforts—or does this just mean you’ll be watching inferior quality programming that is cheap because, well, it isn’t very good?

What New Content Will Be Available on Tubi?

Right now, we don’t know. Original programming is something Tubi has expressed an interest in, but it hasn’t finalized anything yet. Not by a long shot.

So don’t be expecting news on Tubi originals just yet. However, given that Tubi is a Fox-owned subsidiary, you’re not likely looking at poor quality content. Although, with phrases like “cheap and cheerful” being thrown around by the Fox CFO, that naturally brings quality into question.

Fox is, without a shadow of doubt, one of the most influential mass media producers on earth. So whether Tubi uses that association—to leverage high-quality content at low prices—remains for us to see.

What Is Tubi?

Tubi is a TV streaming service owned by Fox Corporation. Because it is ad-supported, the service is free to use. Users can enjoy a wide range of movies and television series’ without having to part with a single cent.

It is a popular service, too. In September 2020, a TubiTV.com press release revealed that the service had amassed a record number of active viewers on the service. 33-million active users, to be exact. That number is likely to have grown in the six months following.

How Do You Get Tubi?

Tubi is available on multiple platforms. According to its financial press release:

So, plenty of choice. If you want to access Tubi via your browser, just head to Tubi.TV.

Are You a Tubi User?

If so, you potentially have plenty to look forward to. As we say, Tubi may well surprise us all by bringing in some genuinely high-quality content. Again, though, phrases like “cheap and cheerful” don’t exactly inspire confidence.

However, it is a free service so aside from putting up with advertisements, users are getting an excellent deal no matter how you look at it. If you want to investigate streaming services like Tubi a little more, there are plenty of options out there.
