Toro Rosso’s Jean-Eric Vergne was the first to set a time ahead of Daniel Ricciardo. The next in line to lead the session was Kimi Räikkönen before teammate Romain Grosjean got the better of him. The Lotus drivers swapped best times until Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg passed them both. Teammate Michael Schumacher seemed to be doing well at first as he remained in the top three for a while. However, by the end of the session, he was left in seventh.

Fernando Alonso had also spent some time in the top three while competing with Rosberg, Schumacher and Vettel. All swapped positions several times until Maldonado took the lead to not give it up anymore. Rosberg was running behind him, but was unable to hold on to his position when the Red Bull drivers started to speed up.

Behind them, McLaren driver Jenson Button was again struggling with his car. Though he ran with a copy of Lewis Hamilton’s set-up, he was bothered with under-steer and front-locking. Despite that and several trips to the pits, he managed to set the fourth best time while teammate Hamilton seemed very much out of pace and eventually came in eighth. The top ten was completed by two other drivers who were expected to set better times; Rosberg (ninth) and Räikkönen (tenth).
